2006 Annual NRI

The NRI has transitioned from a five-year data collection cycle to an annual cycle.  Data collection for a given year (s) is carried out in proceeding calendar and fiscal years.  For example, data collection for the 2005 Annual NRI began in June, 2006 and was completed in February, 2007.  Data collection schedules and sample sizes are not fixed and will vary from cycle to cycle.

Field office (local) data collection for the Missouri 2006 Annual NRI is scheduled to begin in March, 2008.  Data will be collected for approximately 1,100 Core segments for field conditions in 2006 and approximately 900 Rotation segments for field conditions in 2004 and 2006.  Missouri’s 2005 Annual NRI sample consisted of 1,100 Core segments.

The Local Data Survey Instrument (LDSI) software used by the NRCS field offices for local data collection has been updated to improve data collection efficiency.  Major improvements include:

  • Linkage to Common Land Unit (CLU) [via a separate application] to provide quicker access to necessary field office records.
  • Field office staff access to additional years of aerial photography; imagery for 2004, 2005 and 2006 will be provided for the Core segments and imagery for 2004 and 2006 will be provided for the Rotation segments.
  • Improved color contrast in the imagery.
  • Addition of a “same as” option for points located in the same fields.  This can be used to reduce data entry time where the needed management information is exactly the same.
  • Display of more historical data (where available) to assist in local data collection.  If conditions are unchanged from the last data collection cycle, some data can be copied forward to save data entry time.
  • Only sending segments/points to field offices that need local input. The Central Remote Sensing Laboratory (CRSL), located in Ft. Worth, Texas will make interpretations for 2006 before the field offices are asked to collect data.
  • More options for leaving notes in the LDSI.  This will greatly aid communications with the CRSL data collection staff.
  • Development of an LDSI website to provide additional technical support.
