Definitions of NRI Land Cover/Use Categories:

Cropland - cultivated and non-cultivated land used for the production of adapted crops for harvest.

Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) - land under a CRP contract.  CRP is a federal program established under the Food Security Act of 1985 to assist private land owners in converting highly erodible cropland to vegetative cover for 10 years.

Pastureland - land used for the production of introduced forage plants for livestock grazing.

Rangeland - land on which the climax vegetation is composed of native grasses, grass-like plants, forbs or shrubs suitable for grazing or browsing and introduced forages species managed as rangeland.

Forest land - land that is at lease 10 percent stocked by single-stemmed woody species with an aerial canopy cover of 25 percent or greater.

Other Rural Land - land that includes farmsteads and other farm structures, field windbreaks, barren land and marshland.

Developed Land - a combination of land cover/use categories including small and large urban and built-up areas and rural transportation land (highways, roads, railroads and associated rights-of-ways outside urban and built-up areas).
