More Funds Available for Conservation Practices in Missouri

COLUMBIA, MO, June 25, 2001 – The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Missouri will provide $626,500 in cost-share funds through the new Soil and Water Conservation Assistance program (SWCA).

SWCA is a voluntary program that provides financial assistance to help farmers and landowners improve the natural resources on their land. The program, a result of the Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000, is similar to USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). However, SWCA funds can only be used for conservation practices on farms that are not within EQIP, Conservation Reserve Program, or Wetlands Reserve Program priority areas.

"This program will give some producers and landowners in non-priority areas an additional opportunity to install conservation measures on their farms," said Roger A. Hansen, NRCS state conservationist.

SWCA funds are available through 5 to 10-year contracts. The program provides 75 percent cost-share for eligible practices, and incentive payments for management practices. Each participant may receive up to $50,000.

The deadline for SWCA applications in Missouri is July 20. Missouri landowners and producers can apply for SWCA funds at local USDA service centers.
